The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday refuted widespread media reports that it has recalled the Nigerian High Commissioner to South Africa.
The Minister of State II for Foreign Affairs, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro had on Sunday through his official Twitter account dispelled media reports that Nigeria has recalled its envoy to South Africa.
“Much as the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs and the generality of Nigerians are deeply concerned about the xenophobic attacks, there are satisfactory indications that the South African authorities have taken firm measures to stem the tide of the attacks”, the statement added.

Immediately the news hit the media, the South African Government on Sunday rushed to react in a strongly worded statement where it expressed its displeasure over Nigeria’s purported diplomatic recall of its envoys to South Africa.

In an official statement on Monday by the Foreign Affairs Ministry,
the Ministry reaffirmed that the statement earlier issued by the
Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs was “to summon, for routine
consultation, the Acting High Commissioner of Nigeria to South Africa
and the Consul General in Johannesburg over the xenophobic attacks on
some foreigners, including Nigerians, in South Africa. This is a usual
