Photo by Joseph Ekol mail newvision By Joseph Ekol THE Lira magistrate court has sentenced nine commercial sex workers to four hours of community service over dealing in prostitution. Court presided by Judge John Francis Kaggwa heard that on that on the 7th and 8th of May the convicts were found loitering around Kitgum Stage, a renowned commercial sex street in Lira town in the company of men at 2AM. The men reportedly fled upon learning that the policemen were arresting the sex workers. The convicts pleaded guilty to dealing in commercial sex and asked court for forgiveness since they resorted to the practice to earn a living due to poverty. This prompted the magistrate to sentence them to four hours of community service. The convicted sex workers include Aziza Joan, 26, Marcy Apio, 26, Jenet Ajok, 20, and 19-year-old Harriet Adongo among others. The judge however advised them to go back and settle in their homes as they wait for responsible men to marry them adding that responsible men cannot find women on street. The same court also released on a non cash bail of sh200,000, Janet Apio, 40, a nurse at Bar Health Center III in Lira district, who was recently arrested for allegedly stealing an assortment of drugs from the facility. She will reappear before the grade one magistrate on 21 May.
