I Should Resign as Deputy Speaker? For Whom? – Lasun

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yusuf Suleiman Lasun, on Monday described as laughable calls in some quarters for him to step down from the leadership of the legislative chamber.
Such a call is in disregard of the contribution of his people and his state, Osun, to the growth of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) in the country.‎
Lasun stated this while receiving a delegation from the Ilobu Development Association (Abuja Chapter) in his office in Abuja, declaring that it is not possible to reap where one did not sow.
There have been calls that he resign for a Lagos State member of the chamber, Femi Gbajabiamila, to emerge as House Leader having lost out in the race for Speaker.
“‎If an Ilobu man is the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives in Nigeria today, we have made our own mark and we have contributed to APC,” Lasun said, adding: “Anybody talking about Yusuf Lasun resignation only wants to cheat the Ilobu people who have toiled all day and night, having contributed to what APC is in Nigeria today.”
He added: “When I look at that angle alone I laugh, and I want to say this nature itself has a way of regulating things. We cannot want to benefit from where you have not sowed”.
He explained further that his getting into office ‎as the Deputy Speaker was not an appointment but an election at which he clearly won with 203 votes which makes his entry into the office legal.‎
He said: “‎On this note, I’m assuring you that not only that my colleagues on June 9, 2015 elected me on the floor of the House, it was not an appointment, it was an election that was beamed live, and it was watched all over the world, and don’t forget that there were 358 members of that House that were present inaugurated that day”.
‎According to him, having been elected as the Deputy Spe‎aker of the House, he could not be validly asked to step down for anyone as a condition for resolving the APC crisis in the National Assembly.
‎Earlier, the Vice Chairman of the Association, Alhaji Olayinka Ahmed said that they were at his office to show their support and solidarity in the wake of pressure from certain quarters on him to resign.
“We are here to give you our maximum support as indigenes of Ilobu. We do not support any call for your resignation. We know you as one of the pillars of the Action Group in those days.
‎”Coming from our place, we see your emergence as Deputy Speaker as a good thing that God has done for us, and we can’t let it slip away. God has elevated you, and we are proud of it. You also know that you have many things to re-touch in the community.”
