governorAfter Criticising the Economic Team of the Presidency. FG is set to probe Sanusi, Soludo
THE Federal Government is considering probing the tenures of two former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)s, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo and Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. The probe would specifically cover the activities of the CBN between 2007 and 2014. According to a top Presidency source, the probe, which was yet to be finally approved by President Muhammadu Buhari, would focus on the printing of naira notes under the authorisation of Soludo and the management of CBN’s “surplus” finances under Sanusi, who is now Emir of Kano.
According to the source, government believed that the handling of projects and policies by the two ex-CBN governors had issues that needed clarification.
Sanusi recently cautioned the incumbent administration not to engage in acts that would make it end like the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan. He criticised the FOREX policy of the government, which, he argued had enabled some people to make huge money without any investment.
Soludo on the other hand had also faulted some economic policies of the government recently. The source, however, denied that the planned probe the two former CBN governors had anything to do with their criticisms of the government. Rather, the source claimed that the president would not gloss over any corruption matter no matter the individuals involved and the time it took place.
He said: “We believe that questions that have not been completely answered must be brought forward and clarified as a way of ensuring that the nation’s institutions do the right thing at all times.” He continued: “If certain questions were left hanging by the past administrations, this should be the time to clear themselves since this administration is determined to fight corruption and corrupt tendencies. The move would also help any of the past officials to clear themeselves of any perceived wrongdoing.”
According to the source, while Soludo’s tenure would be investigated for the process of printing new naira notes, the tenure of Sanusi would be probed for the distribution of FOREX earnings to Bureau de Change operators as well as the report of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN), which had raised several allegations against Sanusi.
The 13-page report alleged that the former CBN governor spent N1.257 billion for lunch for policemen and private guards in 2012. The Council also alleged that Sanusi as CBN governor made huge payments to airlines for currency distribution, while also allegedly holding an account balance of N1.423 billion for an unidentified customer since 2008.
The FRCN also queried what it called approval of billions of naira in “ambiguous payments” to invoices referred to as “Centre of Excellence” and “Contribution to Internal National Security,” by the CBN under Sanusi.
The apex bank was said to have paid N38.233 billion to the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company (NSPMC) Plc in 2011 for the “printing of bank notes” whereas the turnover of the entire printing and minting company group for the year stood at N29.370 billion.

My dear party leaders, elders, members, chairmanship and councillorship aspirants, I address you today with reference to OGSIEC's purported acceptance of the list of candidates for the forthcoming council election from an imaginary parallel group within the Ogun State PDP.
I wish to implore you all not to lose hope. Let us gird our loins; remain steadfast and calm. It is not over until it is over. Being tied to the apron springs of the Governor of Ogun State, this is not the first time OGSIEC will be involved in this kind of injustice and the deliberate subversion of the will of the majority. What is playing out now was what happened in 2012 when they chose to recognise the weak and malleable group over the authentic party structure and it's candidates.
We are aware that they are afraid to go to an election with us because we are more on the ground. We are very confident that in terms of Mobilization, Organization, Empowerment and Management, APC in Ogun State cannot match us. Ditto the so-called parallel exco.
There is no reason to despair. We are in for a long haul. It is not a 100-metres dash. We are strong-willed and ready to hold on and hold out. This is a clear travesty of justice that won't stand the test of time and the law. We have submitted all the genuine, legally binding documents in our possession to OGSIEC - a final judgment concerning the Ogun State Exco that has also been registered in the Ogun State High Court and automatically becomes a binding court judgment in the state has been served on OGSIEC; all the INEC reports on the congresses, including the cover letter from INEC was served on them; a letter from the caretaker committee that gave some percentage of the delegates to those parading themselves as the parallel group was also submitted to them.
What is more, OGSIEC on its own wrote to INEC asking it to clarify which is the authentic Ogun State PDP Exco and INEC in a letter dated 9th August, 2016 replied, saying it recognises and relates ONLY with the Engr. Adebayo Dayo-led Exco. OGSIEC was already aware of the 26th of May, 2016 order it purportedly relied on to accept the list submitted by one Sikirulai Ogundele-led group and the 24th of June, 2016 judgment that says Engr. Adebayo Dayo-led exco is the only recognised party structure in Ogun State when it told the whole world on the 6th of July, 2016 that it would act on "the position and direction of INEC" on the issue of the PDP "factions".
If with all these documents, OGSIEC still decided to go with the minute group, it could not have been because the group is stronger than us or they are on the right side of the law. Obviously, something ominous is fishy.
It is also clear that by trying to exclude us, OGSIEC and the APC-led State Government have devised a plan to avoid going into an election with us but with the pliable group which only fielded candidates in about 50 percent of the LGAS and LCDAs!
We all know that the Ogun State government through OGSIEC is going to rig the election, write the results and declare same. They are also the ones that will set up the Local Government Election Petitions Tribunal as well as the Appeal Tribunal.
So, in essence, they will be the referee in their own game and also the judge in their own case! However, it does not mean we are helpless or hopeless. We are going to fight this open travesty of justice and grave illegality until justice is done. They have murdered sleep and shall sleep no more.
Already, we have filed criminal contempt proceedings against all those concerned. I believe that very soon, the contemnors will find themselves where they rightly belong.
Also, a case has been filed against OGSIEC, the Attorney-General of Ogun State and the Commissioner for Justice and the Minister of Finance wherein the authentic Ogun State PDP Exco is asking the court to declare the Local Government election null and void if it is held without the authentic and validly nominated candidates by the ONLY recognised Engr. Adebayo Dayo-led State Exco.
The authentic and recognised State Exco who are the plaintiffs in the suit are also asking the court to stop the allocations due to the local government that will be constituted without the participation of the validly nominated candidates of the PDP.
I promise you all that, by the grace of Almighty Allah, we will slug it out within the ambit of the law. But while we do this, I hope everyone can now clearly see those that are working for the APC. In accordance with the working arrangement that they had during the 2015 elections which made the APC not to challenge their elections, they have decided to work for them again. But, I assure you all that we and the PDP will overcome.

Cardinal Anthony Okogie writes open letter to President Buhari
Dear Mr. President
Last year, when you assumed office, the chant of “Change,” your campaign slogan, ushered you into the Presidential Villa. Today, cries of “hunger” could be heard across the length and breadth of our vast country.
Nigerians hunger, not only for food, but also for good leadership, for peace, security, and justice.
This letter is to appeal to you to do something fast, and, if you are already doing something, to redouble your effort. May it not be written on the pages of history that Nigerians die of starvation under your watch.
As President, you are the chief servant of the nation. I, therefore, urge you to live up to the huge expectation of millions of Nigerians. A stitch in time saves nine. This is the second year of your administration. You and your party promised to lead the masses to the Promised Land. It is not an easy task to lead.
But by campaigning for this office, you offered to take the enormous task of leadership upon yourself.
Nigerians are waiting for you to fulfill the promises you made during the campaign. They voted you into office because of those promises. The introduction of town hall meetings is a commendable idea. But in practice, you, not just your ministers, must converse with Nigerians.
You are the President. You must be accountable to them. The buck stops on your desk. Even if your administration has no magic wand at least give some words of encouragement.
On this same score, please instruct your ministers, and insist that they be sincere and polite at those town meetings.
Their sophistry will neither serve you nor Nigerians. Mr. President, if you want to leave a credible legacy come 2019, in all sincerity, please retool your administration.
Change is desirable. But it must be a change for the better. Let this change be real. Change is not real when old things that we ought to discard refuse to pass away. You will need to take a critical look at your cabinet, at the policies and programs of your administration, and at those who help you to formulate and execute them.
You will need to take a critical look at the manner of appointments you have been making. It is true that commonsense dictates that you appoint men and women you can trust. But if most of the people you trust are from one section of the country and practice the same religion, then you and all of us are living in insecurity.
The Nigerian economy has never been in a state as terrible as this. You as President are like the pilot of an aircraft flying in turbulence.
Turbulent times bring the best or the worst out of a pilot. We can no longer blame the turbulence on past administrations.
You know quite well that some of the officials of your administration served in previous dispensations. Blame for what we have been experiencing is, in fact, bipartisan in character.
The entire political class needs to come together, irrespective of party differences, to acknowledge its collective guilt and to seek ways of saving the sinking ship that our country has become.
This cannot be done if some officials of your administration demonize and alienate members of the opposition. If a large portion of the blame for the present situation is to be laid on the doorsteps of the entire political class, the search for a solution must involve everyone.
That is why no one should be alienated. All hands must be on deck. This is the time to revitalize moribund industries, reinvigorate our agriculture, make our country tourist and investor friendly, and enable our young men and women to find fulfillment by contributing to the common good. None of these lofty goals can be achieved without good education.
On this particular issue, recent appointments you have made in the education sector raise a question: have you really appointed the best? Still, on education, it is important that our universities be allowed to use their own criteria to admit students.
It is a gross violation of the principles of federalism and academic freedom for the federal government to insist that only a federal parastatal can decide on who gains admission into our universities.
It is the role of the university senate, not of government bureaucrats, to decide on who gets admitted and who is awarded a certificate. Mr. President, your desire to wage a war on corruption is just and noble.
But a just war must be waged with just means. Those who have stolen the wealth of this country have broken the laws of our country. They must be treated according to the law and not outside the law, and the outcome of the judicial process must be respected by the government.
Even accused persons have rights. Where those rights are violated, we risk a descent to anarchy. It is our candid opinion that corruption is not found in only one party. No political party in Nigeria has a monopoly of looters.
That is why we need an EFCC that is thoroughly independent of the presidency, and an Attorney General without party affiliation working in partnership with various independent accounting institutes. This will ensure that we come up with an objective list of those who plundered our treasury.
Mr. President, pardon me if I sound like a gratuitous counselor. I owe you the truth and nothing but the truth.
In my life as a public figure and a religious leader, I have offered my counsel, for whatever its worth, to quite a number of Presidents in this country. I do this because I desire that you succeed. For the success of the leader is the success of the citizens.
If there is no solution to Nigeria’s problem, there may be endless war. You strike one town, you gain it, and you come again to regain it.
Remember that you cannot put a crown on your head. It is the people who put it on you. Otherwise one day, you will get tired of it. Please listen to the legitimate cries of your fellow citizens.

BREAKING NEWS
"Jimi Agbaje betrayed me. He is a complete disappointment. God will do to him what He does to betrayers who bite the fingers that fed them. He is an embodiment of betrayal."
"He is being sponsored by those outside the South West. Governor Wike is the ring leader. Fayose is aiding and abetting him but Fayose told us in Akure that he will never follow Wike again because Wike was the one who pushed him into supporting Sheriff where he got his fingers burnt."
"The entire South West including Gbenga Daniel, Prof Adeniran and Prof Adedoja have all endorsed me. South West had taken a unanimous decision but Wike wants to impose a candidate on all of us. Jimi Agbaje jettisoned Yoruba interest. He was dodging us all. He is a betrayer. I brought him up when he was completely hopeless and this is his true colours."
"I want Wike to know that South West didn’t interfere in the choice of South South, we will not allow him to choose our leader. This is a Zonal allocation."
"We are grateful to the Police for locking up the convention venue. They are the ones who saved the PDP yesterday. Otherwise, Wike and Co would have nailed the coffin of PDP yesterday."
